About Me

Bartered History is the project of Daniel Hubbell, a history enthusiast and professional botherer of the powerful. In the dark epoch known as 2014 Dan was working at a job that he quite liked but had little to do that week. On a whim he threw a question to his friends and asked if anyone needed some history writing done, and a director hired him on to do some background for a production of Julius Caesar (with some Mean Girls vibes to it). The piece was alright, and probably funnier to him than it was to anyone else. He probably spent more time and money on it than the resulting plate of cookies was worth, but that’s par for this course. Some 500 pages of Word documents, and thousands of pages of research later, he’s still on this site. If pressed, he couldn’t tell you why, but he’s glad you’re here anyways.

When he’s not writing history, he enjoys acting, gaming, and his own day job as an environmental advocate and researcher.

  1. Dear Mr. Hubbell,

My name is Yu-Ti Yang. I am from Taiwan. I am a graduate student at National Kaohsiung Normal University. I am working on an art project related to my family, and I found your article. So I want to ask about the Union Faith.
    This one: https://www.waterwaysjournal.net/subscribe/free-stories-limit-reached/

Taiwan has very little information about Union Faith. My grandfather (Zhuang –Sheng Yang) is the helmsman of Hexin. He was buried in the ship. After he died in a shipwreck, there were no remains. Because such an incident is a sad story, my family rarely talks about grandpa’s shipwreck until I recently started the art project.

My family and I never knew there is a water tomb. And I hope to visit my grandfather’s water tomb.

For this project I found the information of the navigation route between Taiwan, China, and the United States. I also discovered that the oil spill from the shipwreck is heavy pollution, but no ship information was collected in the process. Your article gives me a big help.
I would like to know about the marine pollution caused by the sunken ship and more details about the ship’s design. I would be grateful if you can get back to me.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns

    Yours Sincerely,

    Yang
